Two Blogger One Series ~ The Dire King (Jackaby #4)

So, we finally got around to the last Jackaby book (though there's still one standalone book left). After you see what I thought, go on over to Booker T's Farm and see what Barb thought.

The fate of the world is in the hands of detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby and his intrepid assistant, Abigail Rook. An evil king is turning ancient tensions into modern strife, using a blend of magic and technology to push Earth and the Otherworld into a mortal competition. Jackaby and Abigail are caught in the middle as they continue to solve the daily mysteries of New Fiddleham, New England — like who’s created the rift between the worlds, how to close it, and why zombies are appearing around. At the same time, the romance between Abigail and the shape-shifting police detective Charlie Cane deepens, and Jackaby’s resistance to his feelings for 926 Augur Lane’s ghostly lady, Jenny, begins to give way. Before the four can think about their own futures, they will have to defeat an evil that wants to destroy the future altogether.

Since this is the last book in the series, I feel that I can't say a whole lot about it.

This is an urban fantasy series about supernatural detective Jackaby, who is a seer, meaning he can see through the veil. He can see through creatures' glamours, etc. He ends up with Abigail Rook as his helper in book one, and they investigate a lot of murders that involve all things supernatural.

The central conflict revolves around a growing rupture between the human world and the magical Otherworld. An evil king, the Dire King, exploits long-standing tensions between humanity and magical creatures. His goal is to reshape reality by bringing the two worlds into direct conflict and chaos.

A lot of characters have to work together to try and defeat the Dire King. Something happened at the end of this book I wasn't expecting, and I am a little mad about it, but I think it's not as bad as originally thought; that depends on the standalone and whether it explains things. So, you know, we are going to be getting to that standalone book first of the year, as I need to know!
