Two Bloggers One Series - Sacred Evil ~ Krewe of Hunters #3

I am so glad I talked Barb into reading book one in this series. It's a series I really love and even though I have read a fair amount of them I was glad to go back and reread them with Barb! Check out my thoughts then go pop in over and Booker T's Farm and see what Barb thought!

A terror born of Jack the Ripper

The details of the crime scene are no coincidence. The body of a promising starlet has been battered, bloodied and then discarded between two of Manhattan's oldest graveyards.

One look and Detective Jude Crosby recognizes the tableau:

A recreation of Jack the Ripper's gruesome work. But he also sees something beyond the actions of a mere copycat. Something more dangerous and unexplainable.

As the city seethes with suspicion, Jude calls on Whitney Tremont, a member of the country's preeminent paranormal investigating team, to put the speculation to rest. Yet when Whitney and Jude delve deeper, what they discover is more shocking than either could have predicted, and twice as sinister.

This series is a comfort read for me, I know it's very formulac and that is probably why as I know exactly what I am going to get a fun romance, bit of suspense and some ghosties!

In this one we have murders that look like they could be recreations of Jack  The Ripper murders and a movie crew that could have ties to  what is going on. Jude notices something really off about these murders right away. He isn't exactly thrilled when he is told that a team is coming to help him, the first one being Whitney.

He knows they are an elite team and Whitney seems to be good at her job, but when he finds out they are a "ghost hunting" team he is very skeptical about  the whole thing, He still can't help his attraction to her but the ghost thing has hima little not sure. Whitney knows that the ghost thing bothers Jude but she also knows that they are more than just that, they are a team that is very good at finding the not ghost criminal just in a bit of a different way.

My favorite thing about Krewe of Hunters is the team!  The group as a whole is pretty interesting. This team is lead by Jackson and though out the series you get to know different teams but I do love this first group the best. I thought Whitney and Jude had a sweet romance even with thim not being real sure about the ghost thing. Also the main ghost in this one was a DOG! He helped lead them to bones, and also helped Jude when Whitney was in trouble. Jude had to believe a bit after seeing a ghostly dog...lol. I also liked the Jack the Ripper background of this one!

Just as fun the second time around!

5 stars!

Review of Death Knell and Wedding Bells

Librarian Lucy’s wedding is nearly perfect—aside from a missing guest and the strangled body she finds. Now, she must vow to find the killer in this 10th Lighthouse Library mystery.

Lucy and Connor planned for the perfect Outer Banks wedding—and that’s exactly what they got. Aside from typical rumblings of familial tensions, the late spring weather allowed for a beautiful day, the food was delicious, and everyone had a good time, until one of the guests goes missing.

Before Lucy can look forward to the rest of her life in Nags Head and the work she does at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, she gets a phone call from her boss, Bertie James. Eddie, Bertie’s friend, never made it back home after the reception. Initially, Lucy doesn’t think anything of it—sometimes wedding guests simply have a little too much fun. But this quickly turns to something darker when she discovers the body of a wedding guest strangled in a locked closet, and the police immediately start asking questions about Eddie. Lucy must figure out if the two are connected before it’s too late—both for Bertie’s friend and the rest of her wedding guests.

With the Classic Novel Reading Club reading the Selected Works of Edgar Allen Poe—Lucy wonders if the master of the macabre can assist her investigation or if the hunt for the killer’s identity will remain as nothing more than an unsolved mystery.

The Wedding is happening and everyone is pretty happy. Except for maybe a few bits of family tension but what wedding doesn't have a bit of that but things get a bit more tense when murder happens.

It seems that something might have went down at the reception that Lucy and Collin didn't know about, some people not gettin along, etc. Then they find one of the guest murdered and Bertie's friend Eddie is missing, things don't look good for Eddie.

So of course Lucy is going to try and figure out where has Eddie taken off too and who might have had motive to kill the victim. There was a few good suspects but I did find it a bit easy at least to me to figure out the killer but I still enjoyed it.

I like this series as the characters are a lot of fun, I love Lucy, the lighthouse library, the folks that work there, just everyone, even the annoying one has grown on me a bit. :)

If your a cozy fan give this series a try!

Week in Review #40

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

This week has been a very long and tiring week. Still having problems with my heart rate and this week was just blah. Hopefully next week will be better!

I am a little sad as one of my favorite booktubers Janelle from Too Fond of Books passed away a few days ago. She thought she was cancer free after a battle with breast cancer and her and her husband even went and celibrated their 25th anniversary in Scotland and had a blast, but when they got back she thought she had covid but it ended up being something different and they found cancer was in her lungs, didn't take long after that for her to be gone and it just seems to unreal. If you love Historical mysteries or just mysteries really her husband is leaving her channel up and you should check it out she was awesome and will be greatly missed. :(

Waiting on Wed. ~ Grave Mistakes
Review of Redwood Bend

Books I have added

  • Mister Lullaby - I read Nightmare Man by this author earlier this year and liked it so I am hoping I will also like his newest one.
  • The Cove - Ran across this one looking for new release I thought might interest me for a 3rd Quarter anticipated and it's always bad for me as I end up grabbing things...lol.
  • The River's Edge - I have enjoyed this authors British crime novels before and it's been a while since I read one of hers so I was excited to see this one.
  • The Sign of Four Spirits - My first grab for 2024! It's one of my favorite series so I always have to grab it up.
  • Death at a Scottish Wedding - My second grab for 2024! I loved book one An American in Scotland so I was excited to see the one for next year up on netgalley. Now do I dive in now or wait...lol.

Books read last week

  • Gin and Dagger - Book 1 in the Murder She Wrote series. Very different from the tv show which I watch all the time but it wasn't bad.
  • Manhattans and Murder - Book 2 in the MSW series and it wasn't bad, but I could only find the audiobook and for some reason they have a British narrator and it was annoying. I know Angela Lansbury is British but Jessica Fletcher was NOT!
  • Reap What You Sew - Book 6 in the Southern Sewing Circle and I am just not a huge fan of this series despite loving this authors (Laura Bradford) other series.
  • Redwood Bend - Book 16 in the Virgin River series, only three more to go! I am kind of sad that I am almost finished. I really love this series.
  • Some Touch of Madness - Book 2 in the Gentlewoman's Guide to Murder and I wasn't a huge fan. It could have just been the atmosphere as it took place in an asylum and it's historical but I also wasn't a fan of the main chacter making me wonder why I liked book one...lol.
  • Ghost, Toast and Other Hazards - This was a cute contemporary story with a bit of a paranormal lean. A Ghost elephant! :)
  • Escape from Grimestone Manor - It's a new series that is kind of like Goosebumps but called Monsterous and in this one three kids get stuck in a amusement park spooky ride where things come to life.
Didn't read much last week so made up for this week...lol. I have been walking and listening to audiobooks which is helping. :)

Currently reading

  • The Book of Life - Still working away at this one but not as quickly as I hoped. I am still really enjoying my reread.
  • Sticking to Her Guns - I haven't worked on this one as much as I would have liked but needed to prioritize the MSW books for a readathon so they jumped the line. 17% into this one.
  • Clara Poole and the Long Way Around - It's an eARC that I just decide to pick up and I am only 5% into it.
  • Death Knells and Wedding Bells - One of my favorite series so wanted to get the last book read. Listening to it and about 85% into it. So might have already finished this by the time this goes up.
  • The Rider of Lost Creek - Getting one more western in for June on the Range, it's not bad but I don't think westerns will be something I read a lot of...lol.

What might be up next

I need to get to some of my eARCs but not sure what I will pick.

Two Bloggs One Series ~ Virgin River #16

Barb and I are back in Virgin River and it was a nice time! Once you read my review please head on over to Barbs channel @ Booker T's Farm and giver hers a view.

In Virgin River, you never know what you might find around the bend in the road...

Former actor Dylan Childress left the L.A. scene behind years ago for a quiet life running an aviation company in Montana. But with business slowing down, Dylan is starting to wonder whether he should take one of the offers Hollywood keeps sending his way. He figures a motorcycle trip to Virgin River with his buddies might help him decide what path to take. But his own troubles are left at the side of the road when he spots a woman stranded on the way into town.

Katie Malone and her twin boys' trip to Virgin River is stopped short by a tire as flat as her failed romance. To make matters worse, it's raining, the boys are hungry and Katie is having trouble putting on the spare. So when some bikers pull up beside them, offering to help, all Katie feels is relief. Then she sees sexy, leather-clad Dylan Childress, and in one brief moment the world turns on its axis.

Katie's a sensible single mother and Dylan's a die-hard commitment-phobe. Neither one is looking for long-term romance. But sometimes it takes only a moment to know you've found something that could change your life forever.

Barb and I are nearing out end of our buddy reading of the Virgin River series and I am a bit sad. Only 3 more to go and we are done. This series is such a comfort read and always makes me smile.

In the previous book we met Connor and so we got a small glimpse of Katie as that is his sister. She is a military widow with two rambuncious twins and her brother is very protective of her. Since his move to Virgin River she has been wanting to come visit so she sets out to do just that and along the way she has a flat tire. She is hoping for some nice regular type person to help her but she gets a biker group.

In the group is Dylan an ex child actor who now lives in Montana and sort of keeps to himself. Right now his business is taking a bit of a hit because of the economy and nobody taking charter planes, so he is taking a trip with friends. He helps Katie with her tire and of course there is going to be a bit of a spark.

Dylan's life has been a lot different from Katies so he has commitment issues but wants to get to know Katie while he is in Virgin River, he tells her he would be leaving soon but stays longer than he had planned. He even seems to like her twins and can tell them apart. Yep, he is in trouble...lol.

I liked Dylan and Katie they made a cute couple, the twins were also cute and great for the story but not in it to much that it takes away from the romance. Both characters have their own issues to work though, though Dylan a bit more than Katie. There was also a nasty momma bear and her cubs that were entertaining at times.

I also loved being back with the regulars of Virgin River. It's like visiting friends!

Waiting on Wednesday ~ Grave Mistakes

Waiting on Wednesday has been around for a while and I know that it was taken over by Wishful Endings and called Can't wait Wednesday so will link to her.

Middle school is hard—add a deadly embarrassing family and a huge secret, and it's nearly impossible. An Addams-esque family faces a perilous plot in this energetic, spooky middle grade mystery.

Molly Dade has big problems. She’s got an important violin audition coming up, she’s been paired with her nemesis for a group project, and she’s struggling to hide a life-or-death secret from…well, from everyone. It wasn’t long ago that the Dades were just a regular Maine family living in their reportedly haunted house in the local cemetery. But then Molly’s mom and twin brother Marty were killed in a freak accident. And Molly, her older brother Timothy, and her father became the town’s newest bereaved family.

Except Mom and Marty are still very much present. No one knows why, but Mom is now a ghost and Marty is a poltergeist. Oh, and there’s also Molly’s younger sister Dyandra, who is a zombie.

Keeping all this supernatural stuff a secret from everyone is hard work, especially when the dead (undead?) members of the family still want to participate in things like the Parent Teacher Association meetings or come to the (very public, very potentially embarrassing) school concert.

When Dad’s new cemetery assistant seems to know the Dade family secret, Molly and Marty worry about the future of their family. And when Marty begins to regain his memories of the explosion that killed him and Mom, the twins realize that the situation might be even more grave than they thought. Someone might be after the Dade family—but who? And why?

I am in a huge middle grade mood and lately they seem to be the ones I have been enjoying them more than a lot of the other books I have read lately. :) August 15th from Disney

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.
So the walking is going okay but the chair excercises not so much. Doing the twisty type exercises messed up my back, so doctor said to just walk for now. I am finally getting my back to not hurt. I was on the heating pad for several days on high heat after I rubbed icy hot on it...it worked...lol. Though if I try to do to much twisting it still hurts so I have to be careful.

Not much else to report. Have a great week and happy reading!

What you might have missed on my blog

Books I have added

  • Scarewaves - Middle grade debut from the internet horror superstar who created Creepypasta (I never watched it, so just going of of what netgalley says...lol). Just sounds like a fun one!
  • Scariest. Book. Ever. - A new Goosebump spin off!!
  • Zombie Season - Interesting take on zombies as it seems that the towns only have problems with zombies during the zombie season.
  • Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Lord - I hope this is not to feminist, I didn't notice that word when I grabbed it. It's usually a word that makes me not pick up a book. It's a historical mystery so I do hope I like it.

Books read last week

  • Murder in the Scottish Hills - Didn't like this one as much as the first one but it was still good.
  • Hard Rustler - B. J. Daniels gives me just what I want a fun mystery and sexy cowboys!
  • Smooth Talking Cowboy - This is only my second book by this author and I really liked this one a lot more than the other one I read.
  • Sammy Specter - Cute, short middle grade book about a ghost trying to scare someone.

Currently reading

  • Gin and Dagger - I am about 25% into this one and it's not bad just different reading about Jessica Fletcher and watching (it's my favorite background show).
  • The Book of Life - I am really enjoying my reread. I am at page 166 of 561.
  • Sticking to her Guns - Just recently started this one so I am only 10% into it, but enjoying it.
  • The Camp - I really want to like this one but so far it's boring. They are not at the camp yet so it could get better. 19% into it.
  • Some Touch of Madness - I like this author but this book not so much. :( Around 67% into the audiobook.
  • Reap What You Sew - Not to far into this one, about 17% into it, just not as huge of fan of this series as I am her others. (This is also Laura Bradford)

What might be up next

Not sure as I am not reading these real fast.

Two Bloggers One Series ~ Hidden Legacy #6

After the last book I was really eager to see what was going to happen in this one so I asked Barb if we could just continue and finish/caught up with this series. After you read what I have to say then go check out Barbs review at Booker T's Farm.

An escaped spider, the unexpected arrival of an Imperial Russian Prince, the senseless assassination of a powerful figure, a shocking attack on the supposedly invincible Warden of Texas, Catalina’s boss... And it’s only Monday.

Within hours, the fate of Houston—not to mention the House of Baylor—now rests on Catalina, who will have to harness her powers as never before. But even with her fellow Prime and fiancé Alessandro Sagredo by her side, she may not be able to expose who’s responsible before all hell really breaks loose.

I really like this series and there was something at the end of hte previous one that felt like a cliffhanger which is why I wanted continue.

It's really hard to talk about this without spoiling the others in this series, so I won't say a whole lot. This series is about a world where magic plays a huge part and there are different types of magic users and those with great abilities are called Primes and are the leaders of their house.

The series has been split up into threes and with a different sister. The first three were about the oldest sister and this three has been about Catalina who is now the leader of House Baylor. Her and Alessandro are still dealing with a huge mess that could be end very badly for a lot of people.

Alessandro is still focused on finding Arkan and killing him for the death of his father long ago and Catalina is afraid it's consuming him. Something happens to Linus in this one and we got more of his backstory. Combine that with the evil grandmother, and a lot of really powerful primes and it was one action packed ride from start to finish and I very much enjoyed it.

I really love all the characters in the Baylor family and their friends. It's fun series and I am not sure if I am finished or caught up on this series as there is one more sister left, Arabella, but it depends on if the authors are going to write her storyline or not. I do hope they will but one never knows. I really would love to get Arabella's story as she is a cool magical creature.

So I want to address that thing I thought was going to be the cliffhanger from book five, nothing about that happened in this book and Barb found a short story on the authors website that deals with it but in a very weak way that was kind of disappoint but at least we found out what we were missing as we were both a bit confusing.

I am happy to be caught up with this one and enjoyed it a lot. If you like urban fantasy then you will enjoy this series.

Waiting on Wednesday ~ Curious Tide

Waiting on Wednesday has been around for a while and I know that it was taken over by Wishful Endings and called Can't wait Wednesday so will link to her.

Ninth House
meets A Deadly Education in this gorgeously dark academia fantasy following a teen mage who must unravel the truth behind the secret society that may have been involved in her classmates’ deaths.

Emory might be a student at the prestigious Aldryn College for Lunar Magics, but her healing abilities have always been mediocre at best—until a treacherous night in the Dovermere sea caves leaves a group of her classmates dead and her as the only survivor. Now Emory is plagued by strange, impossible powers that no healer should possess.

Powers that would ruin her life if the wrong person were to discover them.

To gain control of these new abilities, Emory enlists the help of the school’s most reclusive student, Baz—a boy already well-versed in the deadly nature of darker magic, whose sister happ.ened to be one of the drowned students and Emory’s best friend. Determined to find the truth behind the drownings and the cult-like secret society she’s convinced her classmates were involved in, Emory is faced with even more questions when the supposedly drowned students start washing ashore—alive—only for them each immediately to die horrible, magical deaths.

And Emory is not the only one seeking answers. When her new magic captures the society’s attention, she finds herself drawn into their world of privilege and power, all while wondering if the truth she’s searching for might lead her right back to Dovermere…to face the fate she was never meant to escape.

So a lovely person at Simon and Schuster asked if I wanted to review this one and I said sure, so I do have the netgalley for it but wanted to feature it on here as I am waiting to read it...lol. It doesn't come out till October. I am curious because it's a dark academia kind of mystery. :)

eARC review ~ Murder in the Scottish Hills

Received this from Netgalley for a fair and honest review.

When Maud McIntyre and her lady’s maid Daisy travel into the Scottish Highlands, the last thing they expect to find is a body on the train… Will these keen amateur sleuths stop a murderer in his tracks?

Edinburgh, 1911: When Maud McIntyre receives a letter from a maid called Rose, sharing her suspicions that something strange is happening in the house where she works, she and her assistant Daisy immediately travel to the Highlands to investigate.

But as they are changing trains, the body of a man falls from the carriage right in front of them, a bullet in his head. Maud and Daisy can’t believe it – they’ve waited ages for a new case, and now one has literally landed in front of them! And when the local police rule the death as a tragic accident, the pair have no choice but to investigate what they believe is a murder…

Arriving in the Scottish village, Maud and Daisy go undercover to begin their hunt for the murderer, while also investigating the strange behaviour of Rose’s employer, a local art dealer. As they begin to piece together the chain of events, Maud and Daisy wonder whether the cases might be linked. Is it possible the man on the train was killed to cover up something in the village? And, if so, who would do such a thing?

When a local artist is found murdered, Maud and Daisy become convinced the two cases are connected. Searching for the link between the deaths, will Maud and Daisy solve the case before another mysterious murder takes place?

Maud and Daisy in the first book, solved their first couple cases and now feel they have successfully started their detective agency, but they are not getting any business. During a dinner party at a friends house they were discussing the sufferage movement and an editor for a newspaper was interested in having her write a column about her opinions. This leads to her get a lot of mail from women who wanted her opinion on things. Maud working for the paper was helping her and her friend Daisy be able to keep the detective agency open in hopes of some business.

While looking through the letters she finds one from a young lady named Rose who is working for an art dealer and she is worried that her boss might be doing some bad things and wanted to know what she should do. She really liked her job but didn't want to work for a criminal.

Maud decides that they should meet this young lady and see if they could help, even if it was probably for free because the young maid couldn't afford to pay them. She was making enough money from the paper to be able to do a job without pay and maybe it would help them in the long run for their detective business.

On the way there by train they end up finding the dead body of a man who lives in the same town they were headed too and of course curiosity gets to them. They find out from Rose that she thinks her boss is selling forgeries and they start investigating that, but can't forget about the dead body, so also look into that. They are staying at a hotel where they even get into a small investigation there.

I really like Maud and Daisy as characters. I also like Lord Urquhart and hope he becomes the love interest for Maud. That being said I also thought that storyline was very slow moving and I am not sure if it's because there are so many different things they are trying to solve or if I just found it boring but I didn't like it quite as much a I did book one. I also think the author is putting in modern feminist thought in a historical with Daisy and that just makes me roll my eyes but hey that is my opinion.

I will be trying the next one as like I said I do like Maud and Daisy. If you like historical mysteries you might enjoy this series, so give it a try.

Week in Review #38

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

So I started walking, it's only about a half a mile but it's a start. I have been doing some chair exercises I watch on youtube and between the two my body aches and hurts. :( Hopefully it will get easier.  I really hate feeling 80 when I am in my late 40s. :(  Also been watching a lot of low carb/keto recipe or what I ate in a day videos on youtube as well. Trying to get in the groove of thinking well that don't look to bad, I can try that...lol.

That is pretty much what I have been doing for most of last week, so kind of boring but that is my life. :)

Have a great week and happy reading!

Books I have added

 Nothing!

Books read last week

  • Sleight of Paw - This series is fun, I wasn't sure what I would think of magical cats but they are a lot of fun. This is the second book in the Magical Cat series.
  • The Sea of Monsters - Second Percy Jackson book and enjoying my reread.
  • Fateful words - I actually forgot to mention this one last Sunday so including it here but this was read probably around the first of June. I really liked it and now all caught up again with one of my favorite series.
  • Zero Day - Just decided to go ahead and finish a trilogy and well I think I might have left to much time between the first two books and this one as it was kind of boring and I had forgotten a lot of the characters and well all the fun spider action was in the first two and this one was more political and how they would get rid of the spiders and the military and the president going head to head and yeah blah.

Currently reading

  • Murder in the Scottish Hills - I should have finished this one already but it's just not real interesting. Maybe it's second book syndrome. I really like the characters just feel like not much is happening even though therer are like 4 mysteries though some could be connected eventually. We have two murders, art forgery, and a missing stuffed bird (that mystery already solved), just feels like two much.
  • The Book of Life - Loving my reread and will be working on it all month as I normally read on it before bed.
  • Gin and Dagger - Just starting this one. It is a lot different feeling than the show.
  • The Camp - This one is off to a slow start so hoping it picks up soon but only 11% into it. It's suppose to be a slasher, so hopefully something happens soon!
  • Some Touch of Madness - This one is just okay so far, I am about 34% into the audiobook.
  • Ruby Fever - It's been a very fast paced read, I really enjoy this author! Should finish this tomorrow.

What might be up next

 Not sure. :)

Week in Review #37

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?

Nothing real exciting happened this week. I did get to hear from my doctor and

well he said nothing abnormal on the monitor read out. He doesn't rule out that

I could have some heart disease but without insurance it's $3000 for a stress test

so that is a no go.

So he also said it's most likely because I am very overweight and I had to come up

with a exercise plan and I also must try and go back to a low carb way of eating

as that worked for me in the past. It's just so hard, I have no will power when it

comes to foods I love. Oh well, guess it's that or worse.

So Friday I started walking and I guess we will see how it goes.

Have a great week and happy reading!

What you might have missed:

Review of Mr. Mercedes

Books I have added

 Nothing!

Books read last week

  • Mr. Mercedes - Slightly boring but towards the end it got interesting. :)
  • Payment in Blood - The second book in the Inspector Lynley series and I enjoyed it.
  • Shadow of Night - Reread and loved it just as much as my first time reading it.
  • Sackett's Land - So it's June on the Range so thought I would try a western and thought since this is a popular tv movie series that they would all be westerns but evidently the first few are more action/adventure with sword fights not guns...lol. It was still not bad.
  • Murder Gone Cold - I do better with cowboy romances than actual western...lol. Love this author!

Currently reading

  • Murder in the Scottish Hills - Second book in the Scottish Lady's Detective series but I feel like the author doesn't have enough to write about with just one mystery so she has to put several and then it feels like to much. Like they are investigating art fraud, a possible murder, and now just took a case about a missing taxidermy bird and I am not even halfway through the book and I am hoping that in the end some of these end up going together some how. So for me it's a little slow but I still like it.
  • The Camp - Just dipped into this one but can't wait to read more, this one comes out this month and suppose to be sort of like a Friday the 13th type slasher.
  • Book of Life - Haven't started yet but will tonight. :)
  • Sleight of Paw - I am little over halfway through the audiobook and enjoying it. Second book in the Magical Cat series.

What might be up next
