Week in Review #45

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

Not much going on but on August 1st I will be having the stress test to see if they find anything out about my heart. So any possi vibes and prayers are welcome! I am a bit nervous.

It's been nice and hot here and although I would prefer it to be in the 80s compared to high 90s I am still enjoying summer and so I am good. :)

Have a great week and happy reading!

What you might have missed on my blog

Review of Mystery in the Highlands
Review of The Housemaid

Books I have added

  • The Night House - A horror book about a kid who has to move in with some relatives and then witness another kid get sucked into a telephone receiver at a phone booth. Not read this author but this sounded interesting and the cover was cool...lol.
  • Murder by Degrees - New historical mystery series and I am a sucker for historical mysteries. :)

Books read last week

  • The Housemaid - I thought this was a decent thriller though not sure how I feel about the ending.
  • Lying in the Deep - This one is probably my favorite YA thriller from this author.
  • Doom in the Deep - This was a fun sequel to Camp Murderface that leaves it open just enough that the author could write another one if he would like, but I think it wrapped up the two books nicely.
  • Murder at the Mayfair Hotel - Nice start to a historical mystery series and I will be continuing hopefully soon. :)

Currently reading

  • Pencilvania - This one is okay but a bit slow. I did manage to get to 49% so I am hoping it picks up some.
  • Mystery at the Palace Westminster - It's not really grabbing me so I haven't been reading it much so only 23% into it.
  • Castaway - I am hoping to get this done soon, I am currently on 188 of 296.
  • Christmas Bride - Same with this one as I am on 164 of 244.
  • The Paris Agent - The only audiobook I am currently listening too and it's a bit slow going as it's Historical Fiction about WII, first this is not a favorite era to read, but it has a bit of mystery to it and I was curious but it has three points of views and I am slightly confused, so just listening a bit at a time. I am currently 54% so I should finish this week.

What might be up next

Lots of historical romance for a Romance Readathon I am participating in on Youtube that is team based and inspired by Bridgerton, I am on team Bluestocking! :)

Two Bloggers One Book ~ The Housemaid by Fredda McFadden

So I mentioned to Barb at the beginning of the year that I wanted to try and read more thrillers this year, but so far most of them have been bombs! While on a live on Youtube with some friends someone was reading a book by Fredda McFadden and said they were enjoying it and a lot of people commented how much they liked her so I told Barb we should try one! After seeing what I thought head on over to Booker T's Farm and see what Barb had to say and see if we broke our streak of bad thrillers!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

“Welcome to the family,” Nina Winchester says as I shake her elegant, manicured hand. I smile politely, gazing around the marble hallway. Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I’ll soon learn that the Winchesters’ secrets are far more dangerous than my own…

Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out… and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

They don’t know what I’m capable of…

So I am very hit or miss with thrillers. I think I have found out that I really do prefer ones that have a bit more action and are faster paced, so for me The Housemaid was a bit slow to begin. I was also a bit lost on were this one might be going as nothing really happens in the beginning except the fact we figure out that Nina is a bit on the crazy side. If I was Millie I wouldn't have been able to be the maid.

For about the first 45% your really just reading in hopes that something of interest is going to happen and this is what usually gets me with thrillers, I get bored and want to quit, but thankfully Barb was a head of me and said there was a twist coming so I kept going.

So Millie needs this job because she is on parole and it seems like a pretty decent gig at first and she is happy to be there, but when Nina starts acting strange towards her she is not real sure what to make of things. Andrew the husband on the other hand seems fairly sweet, but the child is much like her mother.

I can't really say much more than that for fear of spoiling things, but something does happen around the 60% mark that totally changes the game and from then on it was a pretty interesting book and the end was pretty cool. I can't say I was totally on board with the end but I am curious enough to check out the next book in the series just to see how it goes.

If your a fan of thrillers then I think this one will be a decent read for you.

4 stars (just because it is probably one of the better thrillers I have read this year!)

ARC Review of Mystery in the Highlands by Lydia Travers

I received this book from Netgalley and the publisher for a fair and honest review.

When members of a choir start dropping dead in the Highlands, Maud McIntyre and her lady’s maid Daisy go undercover to discover the inharmonious culprit. But will they uncover the killer before another murder takes place?

Edinburgh, 1911 : When Maud and Daisy receive a letter from Daisy’s cousin, Clara , sharing her fears that two sudden deaths in her local choir weren’t accidental, at first Daisy thinks her cousin is overreacting. But Maud’s detective senses tell her something is afoot, and so they make haste to the Highlands to investigate.

As soon as they arrive, Maud and Daisy go undercover in the choir to find potential suspects. But with one murder deemed a heart attack, and the other declared an unfortunate drowning, Maud and Daisy have their work cut out when it comes to persuading the local police that perhaps the choir isn’t as perfectly in tune as everyone thinks...

But finally they receive a clue in the form of an anonymous letter. Enclosed is a rhyme which they’re certain holds the key to the next murder…

With the clock ticking down to another death, they know they can’t miss a beat - but will Maud and Daisy solve the mysterious rhyming verse before another singer is silenced, or will this case lead to their own untimely swan song?

This is the third book in the Scottish Ladies Detective Agency and although I have enjoyed the first two books I just felt they were sort of average reads. So I am happy to say that I enjoyed this one a lot more.

Daisy's cousin Clara wants her and Maud to come and investigate the fact that two of their choir members have died. They are calling them accidents but Clara just seems to think that it's weird that they both died so close together.

Maud and Daisy don't have any jobs lined up so they decide to head to the Highlands. They join the choir so that they can sort get to know the others and see if it could be anyone in the choir. Though someone knows that they are private detectives because some starts sending them notes with a rhyme about where the next murder will take place and who it might be if they can only figure it out in time.

They don't have success figuring out a couple rhymes before the murders happen but they do save one, but figuring out who was doing it took them a bit longer.

In this one there was a bit more danger for the two ladies and I think that might have added a bit to the reason I enjoyed this more but I think the one reason is there wasn't several different mysteries. There was one other small mystery they were asked to work on but it was one that Daisy could handle herself and wasn't much so I don't count it. I guess I just like my cozy mysteries to have one solid mystery instead of several that connect in the end.

I really like Maud and Daisy and Lord Urquhart who always seems to show up wherever the two ladies are and always there to lend a hand even if they don't want him there...lol.

Two Bloogers One Book ~ Manrattan by Hunter Shea

Barb and I love a reading Hunter Shea's book so when his newest book came out on my birthday it was the perfect buddy read! Check out what I thought then go and see what Barb thought about it at Booker T's Farm.

Exterminator duo Chris and Benita Jackson are sucked into the madness once again as the underground denizens of the big city are transformed by generations of Degenesis and something new (and more hideous) into your worst nightmare. New York is the city that never sleeps - because the streets will run red with blood, filled with the cries of chaos.

I didn't know the author had planned to write a sequel to Rattus New Yorkus, but we got one and the exterminators are back to battle even bigger rats!!!

Chris and Benita had verily surrived what happened last time and thought things were safe, but the rats are back or maybe they had not ever gone anywhere but been hiding. Chris and Benita have sworn off rat hunting after what happened last time but  friend ask them over because he thinks he has a capybara and Benita wants the see the cute little thing but it's not what they thought it's a huge rat and it's hungry for human flesh.

It seems that the rats are still around but they have been feeding on something different than before which is causing them to grow bigger and badder. I am not going to say what it is they fed on as you will just have to read it and find out...lol.

Anyway what happens is a fast paced action packed gorefest of giant rats wreaking havac on the people of Manhattan and it was a lot of fun! Hunter Shea knows how to write a fun killer animal book and I always have a blast reading them, they are short and to the point and it's kind of left open so there could be another one if the author feels like more rat investations are needed. :)

I like Chris and Benita they are a fun couple and have been through a scary ordeal and it was fun to read.

5 stars for just being a fun read!

Review of What Have We Done by Alex Finlay

A stay-at-home mom with a past.

A has-been rock star with a habit.
A reality TV producer with a debt.
Three disparate lives.
One deadly secret.

Twenty five years ago, Jenna, Donnie, and Nico were the best of friends, having forged a bond through the abuse and neglect they endured as residents of Savior House, a group home for parentless teens. When the home was shut down―after the disappearance of several kids―the three were split up.

Though the trauma of their childhood has never left them, each went on to live accomplished―if troubled―lives. They haven’t seen one another since they were teens but now are reunited for a single haunting reason: someone is trying to kill them.

To survive, the group will have to revisit the nightmares of their childhoods and confront their shared past―a past that holds the secret to why someone wants them dead.

It’s a reunion none of them asked for . . . or wanted. But it may be the only way to save all their lives.

I have enjoyed every book I have read from this author and this was no exception, I enjoyed this one too. I think it might be because his thrillers have a faster pace and bit more action than some I have read lately.

This one is told in the POV of three friends and the killers and I feel like it will be hard to explain without spoiling so this might not be a very long review.

The three friends (or sort of friends) all lived in a home for orphaned teens, it wasn't a great place and something they did long ago is now coming back to haunt them.

They each lead very different lives but when someone starts targeting them it leads them all back to the Savior House and to that one night.

You get a glimpse into the past from each point of view of the friends and then you get to figure out how a bad person could be in two places at once by learning from the killers point of view.

I listened to this one and I didn't figure out the twist, but upon a lot of thought I should have and might have if I paid a bit closer attention because it really seemed very easy once I really thought about it so I think it could be easy for some to figure out.

I still thought it was an interesting thriller, but Every Last Fear is still my favorite. I do know that I will probably try anything this author writes after reading three of his books and enjoying them all.

Week in Review #43

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

Hi Everyone! Hope you had a great week! Mine was okay, we had a few storms, got a little rain but nothing to bad. Hope those in areas that are having the flooding or excessive heat are staying safe.

So in regards to my health troubles, I have a stress test set up for August 1st, weird that I can't get in any quicker but hopefully it will tell them something, so that I know if something is wrong or it's just me being overweight that makes my heartrate jump and breathing become harder. So fingers crossed.

On my birthday which was July 11th, dad took me to go see Sound of Freedom which was such a great movie, very sad but so well done. I highly recommend! Because my theater has this thing called Backstage pass that I am a member off (it's free...lol), I got a free popcorn and drink for my bday so didn't have to have the extra expense which was awesome! Overall I had a very good bday! :)

Other than that not much happening here.

Have a great week and happy reading!

What you might have missed on my blog

Review of Sunrise Point

Books I have added

 Netgalley

  • I Heard a Fly Buzzy When I Died - This second book in a historical mystery series that centers around Emily Dickenson and her maid. I believe the titles are from her poems and are very strange...lol. The first title was different too. :) I enjoyed the first one so can't wait to try this one.
Birthday Present Haul:
  • Manrattan and The Housemaid - Barb got me two books we could buddy read! We have already read Manrattan! :)
  • The Toymaker - Polly got me a physical copy off of my amazon wishlist which was super cool of her! She is in my discord and a subscriber to my youtube channel. I am really curious about this book but it's a chunky one!
  • Scritch Scratch - Danielle got me the physical copy off of my amazon wishlist and I might have squealed a little as this is my favorite book from this author and I wanted a keeper copy as I read the eARC. She is also a youtube subscriber and from Instagram.
I want to thank these three very awesome people for making my birthday awesome!

Books read last week

  • The Book of Life - I have completed my reread! I love this trilogy! I could be slightly obsessed with it and the tv show actually...lol.
  • City of Nightmares - This was an interesting young adult urban fantasy book about people turning into their nightmares and about a crime sydicate taking advantage of things, it's first in a doulogy and I am currious how it will end.
  • A Botanist Guide to Flowers and Fatality - The second book in a historical mystery series about Saffron Everleigh who works with flowers and poisons. I enjoyed it.
  • Manrattan - This was a wild and fun killer animal book about rats the size of cars! I just love Hunter Shea's creature books they are always a blast.
  • Sunrise Point - Book 17 in the Virgin River series, I can't believe I am almost done with this series only two more to go! Such a cozy comfort type read.
  • What Have We Done - I enjoyed this one, I kind of like my thrillers with a bit more action which this has so it was faster paced than some and I think that is why I like this author. :)

Currently reading

  • Clara Poole and the Long Way Around - Still reading on this one! I think I am just not really into this one, but I haven't gotten to the actual balloon race. I am hoping it picks up soon or I might put it to the side. I am 25% into it so hopefully something fun happens soon. :/
  • Mystery in the Highlands - I have read a bit on this one this week so 24% into it but hoping to make a good dent in it this week or finish it. A murder has just happened so hopefully I start to find it a bit more interesting as well.
  • Mystery in the Palace Westminister - I didn't read any on this one this past week so still at 10% but I have enjoyed what I have read.
  • Christmas Bride - Just started this print book. I am trying to read more of my own collection and I am hosting a Christmas in July retro romance Readathon on my youtube channel so needed to get in a Christmas book...lol.
  • Castaway - Another one of my retro print books and I am about 35 pages into it.
  • What Happens in the Ballroom - This is one of my audiobooks and I am 56% into it and enjoying it but I always like Sabrina Jefferies romances. :)
  • I Hunt Killers - This is another audiobook that I just started so about 11% into it. I pulled it from my tbr jar.
To be honest, I am listening to more audiobooks than my ebooks or print books so that is one reason they are not moving form this list. I am walking in the mornings and listening to them and I am trying to put my book collection into a spreadsheet and can listen when doing that. :) I need to take a bit more time for those not audio!

What might be up next

 I think I need to finish a few things I am reading...lol.

Two Bloggers One Series ~ Virgin River #17

Barb and I are getting so close to the end of the Virgin River series and it's a bit bittersweet as I really love this series, but  at the same time I excited to finish a series. I am getting my post up a bit late as I forgot to do so yesterday after a day out. So you might have already seen Barb's but if not go over to Booker T's Farm and check it out.

Tom Cavanaugh may think he wants a traditional woman, but in Virgin River, the greatest tradition is falling in love unexpectedly....

Former Marine Tom Cavanaugh’s come home to Virgin River, ready to take over his family’s apple orchard and settle down. He knows just what the perfect woman will be like: sweet, decent, maybe a little naive. The marrying kind.

Nothing like Nora Crane. So why can’t he keep his eyes off the striking single mother?

Nora may not have a formal education, but she graduated with honors from the school of hard knocks. She’s been through tough times and she’ll do whatever it takes to support her family, including helping with harvest time at the Cavanaugh’s orchard. She’s always kept a single-minded focus on staying afloat...but suddenly her thoughts keep drifting back to rugged, opinionated Tom Cavanaugh.

Both Nora and Tom have their own ideas of what family means. But they’re about to prove each other completely wrong...

So in this one we have a couple people that we have met before in previous books. Nora we met a while back as she is a young woman with two very young kids, it was winter time and she was in a run down shack of a house with no heat, etc and those in Virgin River do what they do and helped her out. Tom we just met in the previous book. I really like Nora but Tom I had to warm up to a bit as I thought he acted a bit like a jerk at times.

Tom works at his grandmother's apple orchard, he does most of the work now along with some workers. Nora needs a job, she will do what ever and when she hears about a job at the orchard as a picker she doesn't hesitate to apply, but she is small and young and when Tom sees her he is like no, but his grandmother Maxie says yes.

Nora is not without her baggage but she is a hard worker and is willing to prove that she can do the job. Maxie takes to her right away but Tom is a bit of a grump. Tom has his thoughts on what type of woman he wants and that woman doesn't come attacted with two kids. Though he learns that he also doesn't want some high maintance gal when he invites a woman friend to come visit and she is horrible!

Nora is also dealing with the fact that she is getting to know her father for the first time since she was like 6 because of her mother and just some bad issues, so she is dealing with a lot. Even with all of that she is so high spirited and fun and just a very cool person.

Tom on the other hand could be a bit of a jerk with his additude about Nora and her mistakes and the fact she has two kid whose father isn't in the picture. He is so dead set on wanting a woman with no excess baggage that he at first can't see what a great person Nora although he can't stop thinking about her.

I liked the story but sometimes I just wanted to smack Tom, but I loved Nora and her kids, Maxie was fun too! We also get some of the great regulars from Virgin River which I enjoy making this an easy fun story.

Week in Review #42

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

Nothing new to report, sort of the same ole same ole. :) We keep getting by passed for storms which I like but we need some rain, the grass is starting to look a bit wilted and brown. I just want rain with out the storm part. I am sure a lot of people are tired of storms they seem to be everywhere.

Oh we got parts of our car fixed, but still need to get the wheels alligned which will be on Monday. Then hopefully the shake will be gone. *Fingers crossed*

Have a great week and happy reading!

What you might have missed on my blog

Books I have added

  • Deadly Tides - This is the second book in a series that I haven't started yet but I have book one and I have liked this authors other series so I have high hopes. :)
  • Red Rabbit - I have enjoyed this authors historical mystery series, but this is a bit different from that, it's historical but involves a posse hunting a witch and sounds fun!
I have a red book theme going on there...lol.

Books read last week

  • Persuasion - Reread of my favorite Austen book, so of course I loved it. :)
  • Murder at the Vicarage - My first Miss Marple and it was okay, I was surprised that Miss M wasn't in it that much till around halfway or maybe even more than halfway though it.
  • The Duke's Wager - It's from 1983 and like a lot of older catagory type romances it didn't have a lot of romance and wasn't very believable. I think it could have benefited from being a bit longer but was only 217 pages. Both the guys on the cover were jerks, who used women, so it was hard to believe the Duke all of a sudden was reformed and wanted to marry the young lady.
  • Murder Off the Books - This is the third book in the By the Book series and it's a really fun cozy mystery series! The first book has been the best because of the twist at the end but the second and this was was still a lot of fun.
  • Sticking to Her Guns - Second book in the Colt Brothers Investigation series and I enjoyed it. I love B.J. Daniels as I know I will get some good intrigue and sexy cowboys. :)
  • Four Parties and a Funeral - The fourth book in the Catering Hall mystery series and it was enjoyable. This is the pen name for Ellen Byron and I prefer the Cajun Country series to this one but it's still fun.

Currently reading

  • The Book of Life - I promise one day this will be gone from my currently reading...lol. It's just been hectic lately and print books haven't been what I am reading. One page 259 of 561.
  • Clara and the Long Way Around - So far this one is decent, I am 17% into it.
  • Mystery in the Highlands - Not far into this one but it's okay so far. 6% into it.
  • Mystery in the Palace Westminister - This one just got added to the rotation and so far it's okay but only 8% into this one. It's a book for kids 10+ though the MC is 14.
  • City of Nightmares - This one is different so far as it's an urban fantasy about a how you can become your nightmares and that doesn't always go great. The MC's sister turned into a giant spider and tried to eat her when she was younger and she pretty much as PTSD from it and is afraid of everything. She meets a vampire and I have a feeling they are going to have to work together even though she is afraid of him. I am 32% into the audiobook.
  • A Botanist Guide to Flowers and Fatality - My other audiobook, but I have just started it so no opinion yet but I did enjoy book one. I think I am like 3% into it.

What might be up next

Not sure since I am reading so many...lol. Might need to catch up some. :)

Waiting on Wednesday has been around for a while and I know that it was taken over by Wishful Endings and called Can't wait Wednesday so will link to her.

But now he is running into Perses's minions. Will Steve team up with his crush Sierra and frenemy Vic Turry to fight the forces of evil--or will Steve finally become a force of evil himself?

Dive into the hilarious, action-packed, and villainous sequel of Steve L. McEvil!

This is a graphic novel and I thought the first book was really cute and can't wait to see what this little super villian (though he is kind of nice) gets up too! Comes out July 11th from Crown books for Young Readers.

The Week in Review is where I combine Stacking the Shelves, The Sunday Post and It's Monday! What are you reading?  If you have never joined in on these meme's you can check them out by clicking on the meme and it will take you to the host blog.

Another very long feeling week and I am done with all things...ugh. Still having problems with my heart rate and breathing, the doc still wants me to have the stress test that I can't afford. He has me taking a low dose asprin just in case.

Then the back drivers side wheel came off while were were headed to my dads doctors appointment, thank godness were were not going real fast as the car was making a noise. Not only was that a problem but several other things, so more cost we can't afford.

Hopefully July will be a good month as its my birthday month!!

Have a great week and happy reading!

  • The Rider of Lost Creek - This wasn't bad but I can't say that I have turned into a western reader...lol.

  • Clara Poole and the Long Way Around - Haven't worked much on this one so still only about 8% into it.
  • Mystery in the Highlands - Same with this one so only a few percent into it.
  • The Duke's Wager - For my Bday month I am reading my retro books, only read a page so far as I just added it. :)
  • Murder at the Vicarage - My first Miss Marple for Janellathon. Only two chapters in.
  • Persuasion - Reread because this was Janelle's favorite Jane Austen and it's Jane Austen July so I figured it was fitting and it's my favorite. I have little under 3 hours left of the audiobook.
  • Sticking to Her Guns - Still around 34% but enjoying it. :)
